I hope everyone is enjoying this cooler weather. A lot of you probably have deer hunting on your mind and that is great! I plan on doing a little myself. But to be honest, the best fishing in this state is late fall and all through the winter. For starters, the pleasure boats and jet skiers are not out there! This makes for less traffic on the lake.
As the water starts to cool off, I would try throwing a search bait like a lipless crank bait or a swim bait. After you locate some fish, you can slow down and fish them with a jig, brush hog, or a finesse worm. I would start shallow and then move to a medium depth if you don’t have success. If you get nothing there, move on out to deeper water. From my experience, the majority of the big fish will be shallow. Why? Well, the water will be warmer and the big ones will be up shallow eating shad and crayfish. There are a bunch of different baits on the market to imitate crayfish, or crawdads as we call them around here. Keep in mind they will change colors as the water temperature changes. For a really exciting and addictive bite, you must try the A-Rig or Alabama Rig. It is a bite that you will never forget.
I do realize it is getting to be winter time, but always remember. It is never too cold to go out and enjoy the gift that the Lord gave us. The great outdoors! Until next time, keep your line tight and Go Broncos!
